Going to the Eye Doctor

It has been many years – something around a decade – since the last time I’ve been to the eye doctor. I’m going in tomorrow, and expect that he will want to put me in glasses or contacts. It isn’t because I am having trouble seeing. Instead,it is more that I feel like I am not seeing quite as well as I used to.
I know that to be frugal and responsible is to know what you want from the eye doctor, ask your questions, and avoid unnecessary extra visits. Knowing what is covered by the insurance plan also helps.
What I do not know is how to be frugal about prescription glasses and contacts. Anybody have any suggestions for me, assuming my concerns are realized?

I wear glasses and contacts and my prescription is really high so my stuff is expensive. Make sure you get a written prescription from the doctor’s office for BOTH glasses and contacts before you leave.
Do not by what they offer you in the office but ask for the written prescription. This way you can look online and compare prices. It is cheaper to get your contacts online and two places you can trust are Coastal Contacts and Vision Direct. Both are dot coms and have many customers, including me.
For glasses you might want to check Zenni or Optical4Less but you must have your full prescription in hand to use these. They will call your doctor to verify your prescription but you do end up saving money.

Thanks. I’m checking out those sites as I type this.
Appointment wasn’t as bad as I feared. I’ve got a prescription, but it is a minor one. Left eye worse than the right, but the doctor just recommending glasses mainly for driving.
